While this scenario may elicit a chuckle today, the stigma and misconceptions surrounding mental health were anything but funny for many individuals. In a world where emotional struggles were largely ignored or deemed a sign of weakness, understanding and acceptance were painfully lacking.
A Personal Reflection on Mental Health
I vividly recall my first attempt to approach the subject of mental health with my mother. I was 24 years old, filled with a mixture of apprehension and determination as I decided to seek help for my struggles. When I broached the topic, her initial reaction was one of shock and concern. This reaction wasn’t due to a lack of support; rather, it stemmed from her unfamiliarity with the concept of mental health support. Growing up in an era where emotions were often swept under the rug, she was conditioned to think that discussing such matters equated to weakness. Phrases like “just get on with it” and “don’t be weak” were the mantras of her generation, leading many to suppress their emotional struggles until they inevitably erupted like dormant volcanoes.
Looking back on that moment now, it fills me with a sense of gratitude and hope. Today, I can sit with my mother and engage in deep, meaningful conversations about mental health. This transformation highlights how far we have come as a society in terms of awareness and understanding. What was once considered taboo has evolved into a critical topic of discussion—both in our personal lives and in professional settings, such as coaching and therapy.

In my personal and professional journey, I have witnessed firsthand the transformative power of coaching in the realm of mental health.
