Coaching and Counselling in the Construction Industry: Understanding the Key Differences and Benefits
Imagine two people leaving the same construction site at the end of the day. One has recently been promoted and is struggling to lead people
I’m Gemma Cousins, an ACC-accredited coach with the International Coaching Federation, with a particular interest in confidence, self-belief and helping people feel more comfortable in themselves.
Before becoming a coach, I trained as an actor and spent more than 20 years working professionally on stage and screen. That experience taught me a great deal about confidence, communication, presence, handling pressure and what it can feel like to put yourself forward when self-doubt is getting in the way.
Today, I bring that experience into my coaching work, supporting adults who may be struggling with confidence, questioning themselves, navigating change or wanting to feel more assured in different areas of their lives.
My approach is supportive, adaptable and practical. Coaching gives us space to explore what may be affecting your confidence, recognise patterns that could be holding you back and identify realistic steps that feel right for you.
I don’t believe confidence means becoming louder, more outgoing or pretending to be someone you’re not. For me, it is about becoming more comfortable with who you are, understanding your strengths and feeling more able to trust yourself when making decisions or facing new situations.
My role is not to tell you what you should do. It is to listen, ask useful questions and work alongside you as you build confidence in a way that feels genuine to you.
Gemma, you are amazing. Thank you for treating me with compassion and integrity and getting me to this stage. I have got hope and energy to keep going and to move forward now.
Gemma is relaxed, respectful and sincere and her integrity comes across throughout the coaching process. I had six sessions with Gemma and feel lighter and clearer. My path ahead feels more positive and I am motivated to work towards my future.
Gemma has a calm and supportive quality that put me instantly at ease. I felt very safe and heard and have gained so much clarity from her concise but deeply thought provoking questions. Thank you.
Yes. Your sessions are treated as confidential and our coaches and counsellors are expected to follow appropriate professional confidentiality standards.
There may be limited circumstances where information needs to be shared, such as where there is a serious concern about safety or where disclosure is required by law. Your provider can explain their confidentiality arrangements at the start of your work together.
That’s completely okay. The relationship you have with your coach or counsellor matters, and sometimes the first person you speak to won’t feel like the right fit.
If that happens, let us know and we’ll help you explore another provider.
We keep pricing simple and transparent.
Every session will be different depending on whether you choose coaching or counselling and the provider you work with.
You can expect a confidential, non-judgemental space where you have time to talk openly about what is going on for you. A coach may focus more on goals, change and practical next steps, while counselling may give you space to explore your thoughts, feelings and experiences in greater depth.
Your provider will work at a pace that feels appropriate for you.
Sessions usually last 50–60 minutes and can be:
Coaching is generally more focused on where you are now, where you would like to get to and the changes you want to make. Counselling provides space to explore emotions, experiences and difficulties in greater depth.
There is no fixed script. Your sessions should develop around what you need and what you feel comfortable discussing.
