Relationships can have a huge impact on how we feel, whether they are with a partner, family member, friend, colleague or manager.
Sometimes communication becomes difficult, boundaries become blurred, trust is affected or a relationship simply begins to leave you feeling stressed, confused, hurt or unsure how to move forward.
One-to-one counselling gives you a confidential, non-judgemental space to explore what is happening within the relationships in your life and how those experiences are affecting you.
The focus is on you. Your counsellor can help you explore your thoughts, feelings, patterns, boundaries and experiences, without needing the other person to attend the sessions.
Onward Shift does not provide couples counselling through this service. These sessions are for individuals aged 18 and over who want support understanding and navigating relationships in their own lives.
* Onward Shift counselling is available to people aged 18 and over.
Understanding What Is Happening
Having space away from the relationship can help you explore how it affects you, recognise patterns and better understand your own thoughts, feelings and responses.
Communication and Boundaries
Counselling can give you space to think about how you communicate, what you need from your relationships and where healthier or clearer boundaries may be helpful.
Navigating Difficult Relationships
You may be dealing with conflict at home, tension with a manager, family difficulties, friendship breakdowns, separation, trust issues or changes within an important relationship. Counselling gives you somewhere to explore these experiences without judgement.
Making Sense of What You Want
Not every relationship difficulty has a simple solution. Counselling can provide space to consider what matters to you, what you can control and what you may want to do next.
You don’t need to be in a romantic relationship to benefit from talking about relationship difficulties.
You might be struggling with a partner, family member, friend, colleague or manager. You may be dealing with conflict, separation, boundaries, trust, communication or simply trying to understand why a particular relationship is affecting you so much.
The other person does not need to attend. These are one-to-one counselling sessions focused on your experiences and what you need.
Take some time to explore our counsellors and their individual profiles. If you’re unsure who may be the right fit, get in touch and we can help point you towards the available options.
Yes. Your sessions are treated as confidential and our coaches and counsellors are expected to follow appropriate professional confidentiality standards.
There may be limited circumstances where information needs to be shared, such as where there is a serious concern about safety or where disclosure is required by law. Your provider can explain their confidentiality arrangements at the start of your work together.
That’s completely okay. The relationship you have with your coach or counsellor matters, and sometimes the first person you speak to won’t feel like the right fit.
If that happens, let us know and we’ll help you explore another provider.
We keep pricing simple and transparent.
Every session will be different depending on whether you choose coaching or counselling and the provider you work with.
You can expect a confidential, non-judgemental space where you have time to talk openly about what is going on for you. A coach may focus more on goals, change and practical next steps, while counselling may give you space to explore your thoughts, feelings and experiences in greater depth.
Your provider will work at a pace that feels appropriate for you.
Sessions usually last 50–60 minutes and can be:
Coaching is generally more focused on where you are now, where you would like to get to and the changes you want to make. Counselling provides space to explore emotions, experiences and difficulties in greater depth.
There is no fixed script. Your sessions should develop around what you need and what you feel comfortable discussing.

Setting expectations is inevitable when it comes to relationships, whether romantic, family, or friendships; however, setting high expectations can often lead to disappointment and strain.
