Cara Japon – Realationship Counsellor

Relationships, Bereavement and Difficult Life Experiences

I’m Cara Japon, a BACP-registered Integrative Counsellor and Psychotherapist with experience supporting adults through a wide range of emotional and relationship difficulties.

My training includes Person-Centred Counselling, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Psychodynamic approaches. Working integratively means I can draw on different therapeutic ideas depending on the individual, what they bring to counselling and what feels appropriate for the work we are doing together.

I have particular experience supporting people with anxiety, depression, panic attacks, work-related stress, bereavement and relationship difficulties.

Relationships are an important area of my work. Difficulties with a partner, family member, friend, colleague or somebody you care for can affect many different areas of life. Through Onward Shift, I provide one-to-one counselling where you can explore your own experiences, feelings, communication, boundaries and relationship patterns. This service does not provide couples or family counselling.

I also have extensive experience supporting people affected by dementia. Having previously worked as a Dementia Support Worker and Cognitive Stimulation Therapy Practitioner, I understand some of the emotional pressures that can come with caring for somebody whose needs, personality or abilities may be changing.

For family members and carers, counselling can provide somewhere to talk openly about feelings such as grief, frustration, guilt, exhaustion or uncertainty without judgement.

My background also includes bereavement counselling, work with carers and several years of private and voluntary counselling experience.

My approach is supportive, collaborative and shaped around you. My role is to listen, help you explore what is happening and provide a space where you can make sense of difficult experiences at a pace that feels appropriate for you.

Reviews

Cara is astute and has a good insight.  Counselling has helped me to think with greater clarity as what feels like huge issues are brought down into context when discussed and shared.  I think Cara is a gem.  It is rare to find such a great standard in Counselling
Cara has really helped me understand and uncover my feelings about my situation and relationships, as well as helped me feel much better about myself. Her insight and intuition in reflecting my inner thoughts that she heard while I talked, was extremely helpful. Her kind and gentle nature and being so easy to talk to made my sessions something to look forward to
I was in a dark tunnel when I first met with Cara. She’s very easy to open up to and after several sessions she gave me some great coping mechanisms. At the end of each session we would always discuss what we’d talked about, which was good. I would fully recommend her as someone you can really open up to. I’d definitely go back

Frequently Asked Question

Yes. Your sessions are treated as confidential and our coaches and counsellors are expected to follow appropriate professional confidentiality standards.

There may be limited circumstances where information needs to be shared, such as where there is a serious concern about safety or where disclosure is required by law. Your provider can explain their confidentiality arrangements at the start of your work together.

That’s completely okay. The relationship you have with your coach or counsellor matters, and sometimes the first person you speak to won’t feel like the right fit.

If that happens, let us know and we’ll help you explore another provider.

  • Single session: £85
  • 5 sessions: £400 (save £25)
  • 10 sessions: £800 (save £50)

We keep pricing simple and transparent.

Every session will be different depending on whether you choose coaching or counselling and the provider you work with.

You can expect a confidential, non-judgemental space where you have time to talk openly about what is going on for you. A coach may focus more on goals, change and practical next steps, while counselling may give you space to explore your thoughts, feelings and experiences in greater depth.

Your provider will work at a pace that feels appropriate for you.

Sessions usually last 50–60 minutes and can be:

  • Phone
  • Video call
  • Face-to-face (where available)

Coaching is generally more focused on where you are now, where you would like to get to and the changes you want to make. Counselling provides space to explore emotions, experiences and difficulties in greater depth.

There is no fixed script. Your sessions should develop around what you need and what you feel comfortable discussing.
