Person-centred counselling is a therapeutic approach built around empathy, acceptance and giving you the space to explore what is happening for you without judgement.
Rather than telling you what to do or directing the conversation towards a particular solution, a person-centred counsellor works alongside you, listening carefully and helping create the conditions for you to better understand your own thoughts, feelings and experiences.
You might come to counselling because you’re experiencing stress, anxiety, grief, relationship difficulties, low mood or simply because something in life doesn’t feel right. You don’t need to know exactly what you want to talk about before you begin.
The pace and direction of the sessions are shaped around you, giving you space to explore what matters most and develop a deeper understanding of yourself over time.
* Onward Shift counselling is available to people aged 18 and over.
Space to Explore Your Feelings
Person-centred counselling gives you dedicated time to talk openly about thoughts, emotions and experiences that may be difficult to make sense of on your own.
Feeling Heard and Understood
The approach places a strong emphasis on empathy and acceptance, helping create a relationship where you can speak honestly without feeling judged or pressured.
Greater Self-Understanding
Having space to explore your experiences can help you recognise patterns, understand yourself more deeply and make sense of what may be affecting you.
Working at Your Own Pace
There is no fixed script or expectation that you need to reach a particular conclusion. Sessions develop around what you feel ready to explore.
Choosing a type of counselling can feel confusing, particularly if you haven’t had therapy before.
You don’t need to understand every therapeutic approach before getting started. Person-centred counselling may suit you if you value having space to talk openly, explore things at your own pace and work with a counsellor who listens without directing you towards a particular answer.

Yes. Your sessions are treated as confidential and our coaches and counsellors are expected to follow appropriate professional confidentiality standards.
There may be limited circumstances where information needs to be shared, such as where there is a serious concern about safety or where disclosure is required by law. Your provider can explain their confidentiality arrangements at the start of your work together.
That’s completely okay. The relationship you have with your coach or counsellor matters, and sometimes the first person you speak to won’t feel like the right fit.
If that happens, let us know and we’ll help you explore another provider.
We keep pricing simple and transparent.
Every session will be different depending on whether you choose coaching or counselling and the provider you work with.
You can expect a confidential, non-judgemental space where you have time to talk openly about what is going on for you. A coach may focus more on goals, change and practical next steps, while counselling may give you space to explore your thoughts, feelings and experiences in greater depth.
Your provider will work at a pace that feels appropriate for you.
Sessions usually last 50–60 minutes and can be:
Coaching is generally more focused on where you are now, where you would like to get to and the changes you want to make. Counselling provides space to explore emotions, experiences and difficulties in greater depth.
There is no fixed script. Your sessions should develop around what you need and what you feel comfortable discussing.
