Una McNulty – Integrative Psychotherapist

Trauma, Relationships and Complex Emotional Difficulties

I’m Una McNulty, an Integrative Psychotherapist with more than 20 years’ experience supporting people through a wide range of emotional and psychological difficulties.

My approach is primarily informed by psychodynamic therapy, which means we may explore how earlier experiences, relationships and patterns can continue to influence the way you think, feel and respond in the present.

I work collaboratively with clients, creating a supportive, non-judgemental space where you can talk openly, make sense of difficult experiences and develop a deeper understanding of yourself at a pace that feels appropriate for you.

I have particular experience supporting people with trauma, emotional neglect, difficult relationship patterns, anxiety, depression, PTSD, addiction, eating difficulties and the impact of emotional, physical or sexual abuse. I also have experience working with neurodivergent people and those affected by challenging or controlling relationships.

Relationships can form an important part of the work, whether difficulties involve a partner, family member, colleague, manager or someone else in your life. Through Onward Shift, sessions are provided on a one-to-one basis and are focused on helping you understand your own experiences, emotions, boundaries and relationship patterns rather than providing couples counselling.

My background includes work within the NHS, local authorities, education settings and private practice, as well as supporting war veterans and frontline workers.

I believe feeling safe, listened to and understood is an important part of being able to explore difficult experiences. My role is not to tell you what you should do, but to work alongside you as you make sense of what is happening and what feels important to yo

Reviews

Dear Una

I wanted to thank you for all your support and help through a difficult time in my life, our sessions have been a great help to me and the tools that you have given me will be an invaluable resource going forward.

Following our meeting today, your words helped me reflect on my false beliefs and recognise the reality of my situation.

I decided to trust myself and believe in what my intuition was telling me. I ended that relationship because my needs were not excessive AT ALL —they were simply the basic expectations of any relationship, which require both giving and receiving.

I am writing to you not only to share my story but also to express my gratitude. I have been in therapy for over ten years, and I can truly see the care and understanding you put into your work with your clients.

You DESERVE recognition and appreciation.

Thank you for everything.

I just wanted to reach out to say thank you. Having the recent therapy sessions with you have been invaluable. They helped me get over my hurdles and move forward. Every day is a brighter day thanks to you helping me see myself and my circumstances in a more positive way.

Frequently Asked Question

Yes. Your sessions are treated as confidential and our coaches and counsellors are expected to follow appropriate professional confidentiality standards.

There may be limited circumstances where information needs to be shared, such as where there is a serious concern about safety or where disclosure is required by law. Your provider can explain their confidentiality arrangements at the start of your work together.

That’s completely okay. The relationship you have with your coach or counsellor matters, and sometimes the first person you speak to won’t feel like the right fit.

If that happens, let us know and we’ll help you explore another provider.

  • Single session: £85
  • 5 sessions: £400 (save £25)
  • 10 sessions: £800 (save £50)

We keep pricing simple and transparent.

Every session will be different depending on whether you choose coaching or counselling and the provider you work with.

You can expect a confidential, non-judgemental space where you have time to talk openly about what is going on for you. A coach may focus more on goals, change and practical next steps, while counselling may give you space to explore your thoughts, feelings and experiences in greater depth.

Your provider will work at a pace that feels appropriate for you.

Sessions usually last 50–60 minutes and can be:

  • Phone
  • Video call
  • Face-to-face (where available)

Coaching is generally more focused on where you are now, where you would like to get to and the changes you want to make. Counselling provides space to explore emotions, experiences and difficulties in greater depth.

There is no fixed script. Your sessions should develop around what you need and what you feel comfortable discussing.
