Integrative Counsellor

Joanna Oxford

Joanna is a registered Integrative Counsellor who specialises in mental health and wellbeing. Currently working in her own private practice since Pandemic is well versed in online therapy and ensuring that the client has a good experience of this way of therapeutically working.

Joanna has previously worked in the National Health Service for a 20 year period and has spent this part of her career in various mental health establishments from forensics to open wards. Joanna has a good understanding of mental health diagnosis and also how the system works to support their clients and is enthusiastic to work with those who feel that they need the support when the system is not available to them.

Joanna has been able to bring her skills and knowledge gained from working in the NHS into the private sector and so has a specialist approach to the therapeutic work that can be brought by the client.

Continual professional development is important for Joanna, in 2017 she completed a Diploma in Mental Health Science to deepen her knowledge and understanding of mental health issues and the effects it has on society as well as individuals.

In other areas of Joanna’s career she works as a specialist mental health mentor and works with both under and post graduates to maximise their mental well being for their duration at University. This is a very rewarding experience and allows a real sense of continuity of work with the student both academically and therapeutically.

I feel we are building a very nice and professional relationship with Jo. I feel safe talking to her, I feel safe being vulnerable and crying, and I feel I can trust her. I believe she wishes the best for me and tries to guide me. I think with each session we understand each other better. I am getting to know how she leads the therapy, and she is helping me to look for a new approach. I really like that often she does not even ask direct questions; she just guides me toward a topic and lets me approach it myself.

I found some answers during the session on how to handle a particular situation. I am curious if I will be able to withstand the pressure of my own emotions in that situation, but I am hopeful now. I can identify with the suggestion, feeling that it meets who I am and how I want to approach the problem. I think that building a good therapist-patient relationship is crucial for being able to find solutions that fit my life situation and personality, and I believe we are on a good path to being able to do it

Joanna is a great listener, open minded and easy to talk with. I have done only few sessions yet, every time I felt understood and conversation flows easily.

She makes me reflect and offers options in facing my issues. She also checks in regularly which gives me the confidence I need that when something goes wrong, I do have her ear

I’ve only just started therapy but so far Jo has been very easy to talk with and is very focused on making sure sessions are productive for me.

Jo is a kind, respectful and thoughtful person. She is helpful working through problems and thinking about solutions. She has really helped me look forward to speaking about issues and being accepted for the things going on inside of me.

Thank you for the ‘review’ session yesterday. It felt really good to reflect on where we started and how far we’ve come. It has been a life-altering, wonderfully empowering and wholly supportive process, and I’m so glad that I finally took the leap and sought the help I needed. I’m also incredibly glad that I was matched with you.

I’m writing as I think I will take a therapy break, I’m not sure how long it will be at this point as there are many changes on the horizon and, although I feel much more confident in my ability to navigate these changes, I may decide to return to therapy to help me through them.

Overall, I wanted to communicate my thanks to you in helping me through what has arguably been one of the most difficult times of my life, and wish you all the best.
